The determination of a female student with a “special” face

Student Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen (Hau Giang) despite having an unusual face, overcame her inferiority complex and pursued her dream of opening the door of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law.

Conquer shame and weakness

Most students at Chiem Thanh Tan High School (Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang) know Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen (18 years old, class 11XH2) because of her special personality and ability to overcome difficulties in studying well. My family’s house is a charity house supported by the locality since 2005, located along a small, deep road on the outskirts of Vi Thanh city. I currently live with my 75 year old grandmother and 3 children.

With a sad face filled with worries, the female student said that from the moment she left her mother’s womb, she had to bear an ironic fate. As a child born prematurely, his body was emaciated and malnourished with two open wounds on his face. Despite being so small and weak, Huyen had to undergo two surgeries to get her face the way it is today.

Since Huyen could not walk, her parents sent her to her grandmother to look after her so she could go to Tay Ninh to work as a laborer. My grandmother’s family was also a poor household, without a garden or land to grow crops to make a living, so I soon got used to hardship, often with my grandmother finding crabs and snails to make ends meet.

Previously, Huyen was very afraid of crowds. She was always scared and could not hide her emotions many times when someone made fun of her and called her ugly like “Thi No”. Some people were even cautious and avoidant, not wanting Huyen to come to their house to play because they were afraid that her disfigured face would scare the children.

In 6th grade, Huyen became increasingly sad and self-conscious about her “unusual” appearance. Many times she was embarrassed because her friends called her “One-Eyed Martial Arts Master”. The more Huyen becomes aware of her own disadvantages and shortcomings, the more she fears rude and disparaging words. Over time, Huyen started to hate herself and was afraid to look in the mirror. One time, Huyen’s grandmother showed her a childhood photo and she was “startled” and so haunted that she didn’t dare look at it a second time.

With the encouragement of those who loved and cared for her, Huyen was able to go to school, but her arduous journey to school was made even more difficult by her overwhelming inferiority complex, which made her very afraid of contact and communication. contact with everyone.

Outside of class, in her free time, Huyen turns to books as a friend to improve her knowledge and find joy. Silently making efforts and quietly determined to study so as not to be looked down upon by her peers, like rain soaking the ground, the female student has achieved the title of excellent student at the junior high school level for 3 consecutive years.

Ngoc Huyen overcame low self-esteem and guilt to go to school.

However, in the 9th grade, Huyen’s academic performance gradually declined, due to the feelings of inferiority that continued to surround her, causing her to lose her motivation to study. “At that time, I decided to quit school to go to work. At some places where I applied for a job, the boss was very sympathetic but didn’t accept it. They said they would notify me later, but in fact that was a clever way of refusing and the answer was silence.

That made her 1 year late for school, but this was also the necessary time to help Huyen clearly see her own abilities and understand deeply that only studying can help her change her future and future. people’s perception of me,” Huyen confided.

Huyen is determined to enter university.

The desire to become… a normal person

With the determination to study to change her fate, Huyen regained confidence, continued to return to school and quickly caught up with her lessons. At the end of 10th grade, I achieved the title of excellent student, and was also selected as one of three students at the school participating in the provincial excellent student contest for the 2023 – 2024 school year.

Now, Huyen has boldly removed the mask that has been clinging to her face for many years, removed the shield she relied on for many years, and proactively integrated with her friends. Huyen always told herself that to reassure herself, she needed to change her thinking.

Because she knew how to ignore negative concerns and dared to open her heart to receive love, sympathy, and sharing from everyone, Huyen became less self-conscious and shy. Now, remaining in the eyes and hearts of friends and teachers, Huyen has a unique beauty that deserves respect and love, because she always lives optimistically, bravely faces adversity, and strives to strive for success. fight to pursue your dreams.

Huyen confided: “I dream that one day I can change my appearance and improve my unusual face. I don’t need to be beautiful, I just need to be normal like everyone else and I’ll be happy. If I have money for cosmetic surgery, I hope to affect my eyes, because they are the window to the soul,” Huyen said emotionally.

Ms. Le Thi Minh Lieu, homeroom teacher of class 11XH2 at Chiem Thanh Tan High School, said: At the beginning of grade school, Huyen was still a bit timid and passive in communication, but when studying, she was especially diligent and increasingly diligent. confident and demonstrate ability. In class, Huyen is very sociable, cute, and knows how to help her friends.

“I hope there will be compassionate hands to support Huyen in her studies, as well as help her have surgery to reduce the ‘abnormal’ features on her face, so that she can have confidence in her appearance and have a good future. than. I also hope that she will reach her life’s dream of entering university and later having a suitable job,” Ms. Lieu confided.

Ms. Vo Hong Nga (75 years old), Huyen’s grandmother, confided in a deep voice: “Huyen was not born healthy, so her parents were very determined to take care of her and compensate her, they determined that no matter how hard she worked, Everyone wants their children to go to class and study at university.”

Currently, outside of school, Huyen always helps her with housework and takes care of her three children. When she was sick and had to be hospitalized for treatment, Huyen was like a nurse who devotedly took care of her and made her sleep very thoughtfully. She just wished her granddaughter had a normal face like everyone else, so that her future would be less difficult…

“No matter what the situation is, you must know how to appreciate and love yourself. That is always the most effective ‘medicine’ to relieve sadness. I take this as my life motto to be more steadfast on my journey to conquer my dream of becoming a university student. I hope to become a lawyer in the future, to create values for myself, help people and make my relatives and family feel proud” – Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen said.
