Another person has been reported killed in a clash between two sides over the occupation of a CNG-powered autorickshaw stand at Baniachang in Habiganj. He died on the way to Sylhet. With this, the death toll stood at four. Half a hundred were injured in this incident.
The deceased are autorickshaw driver Abdul Qadir (25), CNG stand manager Siraj Mia (50), Lilu Mia (50) and his brother Anu Mia (52).
Confirming the matter, Baniachong Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Palash Ranjan Dey said that Agua village of the upazila is completely Haoran area. The transportation system is very fragile. There is a clash between two parties over dominance of the CNG stand here. Police reached the spot and calmed down the situation. However, the situation is stagnant in the area.
He also said that an operation has been started to catch the rioters. A large number of police are deployed at the spot.
According to the police and local sources, there is a long-standing dispute between CNG stand manager Badir Mia and autorickshaw driver Abdul Kadir, a resident of Agua village in the upazila, over the dominance of the stand. On Thursday, there was a fight between them over occupying the CNG autorickshaw stand in the village market. Meanwhile, the manager Badir Mia beat up the autorickshaw driver Abdul Qadir. When the matter became known among the people of Qadir’s clan, they immediately started gathering.
On the other hand, on hearing the news, the people of Badir Mia also gathered with native weapons. At one stage, around 12:30 noon, people from both sides clashed. In no time the area turned into a battlefield as the conflict spread to the entire village. Women also joined. Qadir and his side Siraj Mia died on the spot in the clash. Lilu Mia died after being taken to the hospital. Anu Mia, the brother of the deceased Lilu Mia, died on the way to Sylhet.
The situation turned more dire after two people were killed on the spot in the clash. Rioters vandalized and looted houses. At least 50 people were injured in the clash that lasted for an hour. On receiving the information, a large number of police from Baniachong police station and Habiganj rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
