The death-scattering traces of the Yamnaya people – 2024-02-10 10:15:02

Scientific research that has identified the thousands of years of genetic origins of MS (multiple sclerosis) and how it spread across the European continent has caused excitement.

Publika.az reports that Sancaktepe University of Health Sciences Martyr Prof. Dr. Ilhan Varank, a member of the Board of Education and Turkish MS Association, Assoc. Dr. Serkan Demir conducted research.

Demir recalled that a substantial article on the relationship between MS and genetics was published in the January issue of “Nature” magazine:

“A scientific paper found that the Yamnaya people migrated from the steppes of present-day Ukraine and from Russia to northwestern Europe, carrying genetic variants that increase the risk of MS. The research was conducted on the basis of ancient DNA analyzes and data obtained from gene banks. According to the results of the study, these gene variants are especially common in the descendants of northern Europeans, and they may be one of the reasons for the high rates of MS in this region.”

He added: “Such genetic studies can be an important guide in the diagnosis and treatment of MS. Because exactly how MS occurs and the interaction of genes, environmental factors and viruses in this process is still not fully understood. “Research on this topic will help us better understand the impact of prehistoric migrations on our genetic heritage and play an important role in elucidating the origins of such diseases.”

Researchers report that there are more than 230 genetic variants that increase the risk of MS.
