“September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s a good opportunity to have a dialogue about these diseases. In September of last year I was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of lymphoma. I ignored the symptoms for a few months, but I finally went (for an examination).” wrote 68-year-old O’Donnell on the X Network.
The musician assured his fans that after 11 months of treatment and thanks to the care of specialists, he is better. He called on the public, but they took the symptoms of the disease seriously, did not postpone a possible diagnosis and helped the sick, writes the French server.
The Cure was founded by singer and guitarist Robert Smith (65), who still maintains a typical image with red lips, black hair and black-lined eyes. The band played its first performance in 1978 and has performed over 1,500 concerts to date. O’Donnell has been playing keyboards with The Cure since 1987, having to miss a South American tour last year due to illness.
Roger O’Donnell has always been considered the quieter and more reserved member of the band, but he has also been subject to some controversy. He left the band in 2005 in circumstances that led to speculation of disagreements with frontman Robert Smith.
O’Donnell later spoke openly about his frustrations with how his contributions to the band were handled and his feeling that he was underappreciated. These strained relations led to his departure from The Cure for several years before returning in 2011. His return was met with mixed reactions, but fans were happy to see O’Donnell back on stage, bringing his unmistakable keyboard riffs back to the band’s live shows. But now a blow has come in the form of an illness and no one knows how long the musician will continue to perform with them.
