The creator of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

Assange had taken refuge there after his initial arrest in the British capital in 2010 at the behest of Sweden, for a preliminary rape investigation that was closed years later due to weakening evidence and the lack of basis for an accusation.

The United States is pursuing him for the classified information – provided by his contact in the US Army Chelsea Manning, released todaypublished in 2010 and 2011 by WikiLeaks, which exposed US human rights violations in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

According to the will of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish magnate who established the prizes that bear his name, university professors of Law may nominate candidates for the Peace Prize, History and Political Science, parliamentariansformer laureates and members of international tribunals, among others.

Only if the proponents make it public can the identity of the candidates be known, since the Norwegian Nobel Committee only publishes the total number of candidates and does not confirm names until 50 years later.

The Nobel Prize is awarded every year on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of the death of its founder, in a double ceremony: at Oslo City Hall, for the Peace Prize, and at the Konserthus of Stockholm, for the other five awards.

The Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi was the winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her defense of women’s rights in the Persian country.
