The combative Fabio Jakobsen: “Can I still beat Jasper Philipsen? Of course!”

It takes some getting used to: Fabio Jakobsen no longer rides for Quick Step, but for DSM. The 27-year-old Dutchman will race in the grand tours. “I’m aiming for stage victories at the Giro and the Tour,” he says during an internship in Spain.

After 6 years at Quick Step, Fabio Jakobsen opens a chapter with the DSM team.

“I felt comfortable there and enjoyed it, but maybe I was too comfortable. I notice that a cool breeze now energizes me.”

There was no more room for me. Otherwise I would have liked to stay.

With the arrival of Tim Merlier, the desire for a seat in the Quick Step cockpit became evident. “There was no longer any room for me,” explains Jakobsen. “Otherwise I would have liked to stay.”

“It’s a shame, but I won’t leave with sadness or arguments,” he assures. “I am very grateful to the Wolfpack for allowing me to travel there.”

“But still, the DSM was another option and maybe in a few years it will prove to be better.”

“Maybe I would have changed anyway,” Jakobsen says. “At Quick Step, the Tour is now all about Remco (Evenepoel, ed.), I think that’s logical.”

“I will still lose against Philipsen, but he will also lose against me”

At DSM-Firmenich Post NL, the Tour de France is an option for Fabio Jakobsen.

“The team is very focused on sprinting,” he notes. “We have a special sprint department that trains together and consults together.”

In the past the team has scored with Marcel Kittel and John Degenkolb. “As a junior I watched the Tour with Marcel Kittel. His former teammate Roy Curvers is now head of our sprint team.”

“They have a sprint heritage here and are fully committed to that,” notes Jakobsen, who wants to score in the grand tours. “I’m aiming for stage victories at the Giro and the Tour.”

“Last year I was pretty good, but to win a lot you have to be good. Look at Jasper Philipsen.”

Will he be able to beat the green jersey? “Of course,” smiles Jakobsen. “Yes.”

“Sometimes I’ll lose to him, but he’ll lose to me too. That’s the best of sports.”

“Jasper is the man to beat, we will put him under pressure,” promises the Dutchman.
