The coalition government’s talks are stuck on the terms of the PPP – 2024-02-19 16:37:24

10 days are going to pass after the election in Pakistan. But even today it is not sure who will form the government in the country. Nawaz Sharif’s party PML-N and Bilwal Bhutto Zardari’s PPP have not yet reached a final decision on power sharing despite announcing the alliance. The talks between the two parties are repeatedly stalling on terms of ‘give-and-take’.

It is reported that the PPP has promised support to the PML-N in the government formation and subsequent prime ministerial elections in exchange for several important constitutional posts including the president of Pakistan. However, they have announced that they will not take any ministry.

PPP sources said the party has not finalized any names for the constitutional and parliamentary posts so far. However, the current Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, Raja Pervez Ashraf, is expected to remain in the post. Again, former Prime Minister Yusuf Raja Gilani also wants this post.

Earlier, Raja Geelani was the Speaker of the National Assembly during the second PPP government under Benazir Bhutto from 1993 to 1996.

The conditions given by the PPP
According to sources, the PPP has sought the support of PML-N for the Senate seat that will fall vacant if Geelani is elected Speaker.

Besides, Geelani may also be considered for the post of Senate Chairman. But it all depends on the outcome of ongoing talks between the two parties.

The issue of allocation of development funds to the provinces also came up in the discussion of the CCC.

Sources said the new government would release development funds unhindered to the provinces, especially Sindh, a guarantee the PPP sought from the PML-N leadership.

It is heard that the PPP has also sought ‘some space’ in Punjab as a condition for PML-N’s participation in the coalition government.

PML-N won the maximum number of 137 seats in the province as a single party in the last February 8 elections. The party has already nominated Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz as the new chief minister.

PPP won 10 seats in the Punjab assembly elections and came third. PTI-backed independent candidates won the second highest number of seats at 116.

According to sources, the two parties are also discussing the formation of a provincial government in Balochistan. PPP is the largest party in Balochistan, followed by PML-N. Interestingly, both the parties are demanding to form their own government in the province.
