China’s defense minister Tung Chun has highlighted China’s concept of global security. He made the point in a speech at the 21st Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Sunday (June 1). In his speech, he pledged that hegemony and power politics will not be allowed to harm the Asia-Pacific region. Chinese media reported CGTN.
The Chinese defense minister stressed the concept of building a community with a cooperative future for humanity, global development initiative, global security initiative and global civilization initiative.
Tung Chun said in his speech that the people of the Asia-Pacific region are committed to achieving harmony, are peaceful, independent, self-reliant and have always supported each other. In the face of great changes, countries should build a new position of equal participation, sincere exchange and transparent regional security cooperation.
He said, the legitimate security interests of different countries should be protected. China will always stand up for the fairness of developing countries and create opportunities to participate in security management equally. China believes that there is only one system in the world, that is the UN-centered world system.
He also said China supports upholding true multilateralism in regional security. ASEAN-centric regional cooperation frameworks and mechanisms are rational, effective and widely accepted.
China hopes that some countries will return to the right path of dialogue and consultation, and regional countries should work to make the South China Sea a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation, the Chinese defense minister said.
Tung said China will adhere to the principles of peace, development, universal benefit and co-governance, and actively implement global data security and artificial intelligence management initiatives.
He also mentioned that China will conduct extensive security dialogue with other countries, jointly establish and improve governance.
Notably, the Shangri-La Dialogue is the largest defense forum in the Asian region. This year’s dialogue starts from May 31 and ends on June 2. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy gave a speech on the last day of the dialogue.
