SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Miss Universe organization, with more than 60 years of history, announced this Monday the shortlist to represent Cuba in the world beauty pageant.
On its official Instagram account, the organization presented the photos of the 95 preselected from the casting to which 578 women showed up.
“Of the 578 women nominated within the United States, Cuba and other countries, they are the 95 preselected,” wrote Miss Universe Cuba.
From the group, in-person castings will be held to obtain the group of 20 official candidates.
Alina Robert, one of the young women preselected to represent the island, is an actress and presenter who has participated in beauty pageants.
She was on the Univision program “Nuestra Belleza Latina” in 2014 and was fourth finalist there.
The majority of the candidates were born in Cuba and arrived in the United States “by raft, by boat or through a visa,” according to Prince Julio César, national director of Miss Universe Cuba. The participation of a Cuban representative in Miss Universe this year marks a historical milestone and represents an important step towards inclusion in the pageant.
The decision to include Cuba in the contest this year responds to a “vision” of the organization that seeks “inclusion, regardless of the existing political paradigms,” Prince Julio César said in this regard. “The idea is to give the opportunity to the woman as a whole so that she can express her qualities and virtues and carry a message,” he added.
In this sense, the national director of Miss Cuba-Miss Universe did not rule out that the winner of the pageant in Miami brings a message of “freedom and democracy” to the Miss Universe final in Mexico.
Since the beginning of the dictatorship in Cuba in 1959, the Island stopped participating in the contest because “it was not compatible with its ideals,” the director recalled. After the Cuban Revolution, for two years, Cuban queens in exile were crowned in an event held in Miami called Miss Cuba Libre. However, this contest did not last due to political tensions between Havana and the United States.
