The message from the publication, in the face of serious financial problems.
“The Century”. Santiago. 9/8/2024The situation of non-corporate, alternative, political and analytical press media in the country continues unchanged. Another example was seen these days when a new edition of Le Monde Diplomatique Chile was released, on “daily paper”, of lower quality than the usual “bond paper”.
And this was the call that accompanied that edition:
“The Chilean edition of Le Monde Diplomatique is facing serious financial problems, the result of a series of factors, including the rise in many costs, especially paper, as well as the reduction in newsstands and the scarcity of state advertising.
As a first step, we have decided to use 50-gram newsprint instead of 75-gram bond paper. We hope that this measure will be temporary and that in some issues we will return to publishing on bond paper, which is more solid, allows for better reading, highlights the illustrations and enhances the presence of the newspaper in kiosks.
How to support Le Monde Diplomatique?
One way is by subscribing, hopefully in the form of books. Subscriptions and kiosk sales are the basis of our newspaper’s support and independence. Subscribers can move up to the book category, give away subscriptions and promote us with their contacts.
Ministries and various state agencies can place advertisements in Le Monde Diplomatique (in accordance with the government programme which indicated that state advertising would be diversified). Quality universities can
acquire spaces for advertisements or publications, as UTEM and USACH do.
We trust that we can count on your support and continue to contribute to critical thinking.”
