The biggest technological disappointments of 2023 according to the Androidworld editorial team

It’s not always all rosy in the world of technology. In addition to some flagship products and services, there are also several flops. In this article we’ll walk you through the biggest tech lows of 2023 and discuss our biggest disappointments.

The biggest disappointment according to Dim: the world of smartphones in general

Call me a fossil, but the world of smartphones was incredibly exciting until 2015. A lot happened, we knew little and yet we were regularly surprised. In 2023, the smartphone market has become a one-size-fits-all market, where the one with the lowest price wins.

Smartphones are a commodity and technical development is stabilizing enormously. This means that you can buy a good device for a relatively low amount. This means that the choice is very wide and many brands realize that they have invested too little in the brand. For years people have been concerned with P for price and F for features and not M for brand. In the research we do at Androidworld, we see that many people change brands when purchasing another device under the influence of price. Only a brand like Samsung does a lot to promote its brand love by investing large sums in lifestyle and influential people. The exception to the rule is Nothing, I like the way this brand markets itself. It should be like this, making a difference with a good product and a nice brand.

The biggest disappointment according to Laura: the price of the OnePlus Open

With a new form factor we also see new phone prices and this has obviously been the case for years. The reason I find the price of the OnePlus Open so disappointing is because I feel it isn’t necessary. If you are OnePlus, don’t you want to compete with Samsung, which charges lower prices for its foldables? I think OnePlus is sidelining themselves early by making the device so terribly expensive. 1799 euros. These are 120 luxury cocktails, for many two to four months’ rent or mortgage. Obviously that shape is very nice, but is it really worth that much money for a device that actually brings little new in terms of functionality? As my favorite fossil says: the world of smartphones is no longer exciting in terms of new gimmicks, so beyond brightness and shape, there are a few reasons why I choose the OnePlus Open. Don’t get me wrong: it’s a phenomenal device. It works well, it’s lightning fast, it’s an impressive feat of engineering, but why make it so expensive that it’s only for the elite? Not nice, OnePlus.

Biggest disappointment according to Jelle: Metaverse and Galaxy Z Flop 5

In my opinion, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 was very disappointing in 2023. I find it fantastic that one can so quickly give up such a huge advantage – which Samsung had in the field of foldables – by daring little. Samsung has it sorted out and it’s just something other brands have taken advantage of.

Like OnePlus, which this year presents by far the best foldable smartphone on the market with OnePlus Open. This is largely due to the device’s finer aspect ratio. After all, Samsung has once again chosen to use a cover screen with an aspect ratio of 23:9. As a result, Samsung’s foldable device is still very long, narrow and simply not pleasant to use. The South Korean manufacturer has opted for a screen of this type for years, despite numerous criticisms, and therefore in my opinion it has lost its leadership. This also affects the specifications that manufacturers put into folding tables. With Samsung, despite the price, you see that you don’t get the best of the best. Especially when you look at the cameras. OnePlus has already done it much better.

Honorable Mention: Metaverse

In addition to Elon with X, Mark with Meta also does everything he can to waste money. In Zuckerberg’s case, he does so by investing billions of dollars in the Metaverse, the virtual world where it is possible to explore 3D spaces and interact socially with others. Aside from the fact that it doesn’t seem like much yet, in my opinion we are far from ready and I don’t see us humans entering this large-scale Metaverse with virtual glasses. Mark thinks differently and has been spending billions in his virtual world for years. Many investors are already unhappy with him and I don’t think he will do Meta any good in the long term.
