Introducing your baby to the stage where he can consume solid foods is very important because of the impact it will have on his development.
This step in their growth, although it may vary depending on each child due to their growth and individual conditions, it is advisable to do it safely and gradually, considering the appropriate feeding stages that guarantee healthy practices.
We share a guide about these phases of consumption and what foods to offer your baby in each one.
Stage 1
Breastfeeding or formula (0-6 months)
During the first six months of life, breast milk or formula are the main foods for the baby.
Breast milk provides all the nutrients necessary for healthy growth and development, while infant formulas are made to provide complete and balanced nutrition.
It is not necessary to introduce solid foods during this stage, as milk provides everything the baby needs. Health experts recommend that, as far as possible, the food for these first months of life be breast milk.
Stage 2
Introduction of solid foods (6 months)
From six months onwards, you can begin to introduce solid foods into your baby’s diet. These foods should be soft purees and easy to swallow to avoid the risk of choking.
Some recommended foods for this stage include pureed fruits, such as banana, pear, apple, and pureed vegetables, such as carrots, pumpkin, and potatoes.
At this stage it is also recommended to introduce infant cereals mixed with breast milk or formula to make them softer and more liquid. Likewise, it is suggested to start with vegetables as a new solid food and then move on to fruits.

Stage 3
Variety expansion (7-9 months)
During this stage, the variety of solid foods offered to the baby can be expanded.
Foods with more texture and flavor can be introduced, such as pureed meat, fish or chicken. Small soft pieces of cooked fruits and vegetables can also be offered so that the baby can begin to experience different flavors and textures.
It is important to continue monitoring for signs of food intolerance or allergies during this stage, so it is recommended to go for one food at a time to immediately identify any food that the child does not like.
Stage 4
More solid foods (9-12 months)
As the baby approaches one year of age, you can begin to offer more solid foods and larger pieces that the baby can grab and eat on his or her own.
It is possible to give soft foods such as pieces of avocado, banana, mango, toasted whole wheat bread, pieces of soft cheese or pasta cooked in small pieces. You can also introduce foods such as natural unsweetened yogurt, cottage cheese or small pieces of well-cooked meat.

Stage 5
Transition to family diet (12 months and older)
From the first year of life, the baby can begin to consume a diet similar to that of the family, as long as the foods are safe and appropriate for their age. A variety of fresh, healthy foods can be offered, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and dairy products.
Experts recommend that at this stage the baby has meal times similar to those of other family members.
It is important to continue monitoring the baby’s feeding and adapt it according to his needs and abilities.
