The ban on old cars entering the center of Sofia is lifted from March 1. It was introduced at the beginning of December 2023 for three months, and the aim was to reduce air pollution. However, the ban was never effectively enforced, as the municipality did not impose fines on violators.
At the beginning of January, the mayor Vasil Terziev stated that the entry of old cars into the forbidden zone was between 8,000 and 10,000 per day. However, it is possible that some of them violated the ban more than once. Towards the end of the ban, the average number of offenders (not entries) averaged 600 per day.
The low-emission zone was banned for eco-category I cars or petrol cars first registered before January 1, 1996 and diesel cars first registered before January 1, 2002.
However, there were no fines for the violators, as the automatic system for detecting them never worked. Already at the end of November, the municipality announced that for the first violation there will only be a warning, and for the second, fines will be imposed. Thus, the so-called low-emission zone practically remained on paper.
From next winter, an even larger part of the capital’s center will be off-limits to old cars. At least this is what the municipal ordinance provides. However, it is possible that it will be changed by the Metropolitan Municipal Council.
