The average result of the matriculation exam in Bulgarian language and literature in 2024 is a good 4.32, the Minister of Education Prof. Galin Tsokov announced on Friday. This is the highest average state-leaving exam score ever, a few tenths better than the average from 2008. This year’s twelfth graders averaged 58.48 out of a possible 100.
In 2023, the GPA was a good 3.93, or 50.14 points, and was among the worst in years.
Fourth-graders’ results from the national external assessment are also improving, the Ministry of Education reported.
Over 5,500 excellent students
5,557 high school seniors have an excellent mark on the Bulgarian language matriculation exam, while last year their number was 1,185. 24 high school seniors across the country have a full score on the matriculation exam, while last year only one student had a similar result.
Poor grades in Bulgarian language have almost halved. In 2023, their number was 8128, and in 2024 – 4325.
In 2024, nearly 47,000 twelfth-graders took the matriculation exam in Bulgarian language and literature. In addition to the test tasks, the seniors had to write a text. They chose between an essay on “The Price of Compromise” in Hristo Smirnenski’s “The Tale of the Ladder” or an essay on “Silence – Strength or Weakness”.
In the statistics by region, the first seven and the last three remain unchanged – Sofia city, Smolyan, Plovdiv, Varna, Blagoevgrad, Stara Zagora, Ruse and respectively – Shumen, Razgrad and Pleven.
There is no region that has lowered its results of the state matriculation exams in Bulgarian language and literature, and improvement is noticeable in Kyustendil, Sofia region, Pernik, Pazardzhik, Vidin and Veliko Tarnovo.
The average grade of the second matriculation exam
The average result of the second compulsory matriculation is a very good 4.72, again showing an increase compared to 2023, when the result was a good 4.48.
In this year, a significant increase in the excellent grades of the two matriculation examinations, as well as a decrease in the number of weak ones, was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science.
3,174 twelfth-graders got two excellent grades each, and 251 students got two perfect sixes. At the second matriculation exam, 74 students have a full number of points, while the previous year they were 50. There is also an improvement in the poor grades of the second matriculation exam. From 2,554 poor ratings in 2023, they are now down to 1,765.
Growth in fourth graders as well
Fourth-graders’ scores on the national external assessment are also improving. A total of 15,570 students received two excellent grades, which is 5,600 more than last year. The average number of points in Bulgarian language and literature is 72.6 or a very good 4.97, and in mathematics – 70.53, which equals a very good 4.87.
1,661 fourth-graders have a full number of points in mathematics, and 351 in the Bulgarian language. There are 74 students with a full number of points. The excellent grades in Bulgarian language and literature are 23,362, and in mathematics – 19,595.
3,084 students got poor grades in mathematics, and 4,512 in Bulgarian.
The first six from regions are also retained for fourth graders. The best results are in Sofia city, Smolyan, Varna, Blagoevgrad, Gabrovo and Pernik. The lowest results are in Kardzhali, Vidin and Sliven.
The final exams are coming up in the coming weeks. Year 10 external assessment is on Monday but will start at 11am due to the 2 in 1 election on Sunday.
The national external assessment in Bulgarian language and literature at the end of the 7th grade will be on June 19, and in mathematics two days later.
