Cardinal Dom Hate Schererarchbishop of São Paulo, sent a letter to the president of the São Paulo City Council, Milton Leite (União Brasil), requesting the sending of the serious complaints made by the councilor Rubinho Nunes (Union) regarding the priest Giulio Lancellotti (Photo).

According to information from Folha de S. Paulo, Councilor Nunes worked to establish an ICC (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) in February, whose main focus is the priest. In an interview with the newspaper, Leite confirmed that she has received extremely serious complaints and that she will forward them to the Public Prosecutor of São Paulo, the CNBB (National Confederation of Brazilian Bishops) and the Vatican. However, so far you have not revealed the contents of the complaints.

I ask for a little patience. I will wait for the first complaint against the priest, which is being processed, to arrive in the Vatican. Both there and at the state Public Prosecutor’s Office [de São Paulo] and at CNBB [Confederação Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil]“, Leite told the San Paolo newspaper.

And he added: “When the charges against him, which are extremely serious, are brought, I will speak out. Until then I will wait for the board of directors meeting [que ocorrerá no retorno do recesso do Legislativo paulistano].”

What does the Archdiocese of Sao Paulo say?

In an official note, the Archdiocese of São Paulo reported that, after learning of the interview, it sent a letter to councilor Nunes requesting the transmission of the alleged accusations. The archdiocese stated that it was not aware of the content of the accusations made by the councilor and regretted not having been adequately informed about the matter.

Earlier this month the archdiocese expressed doubts about the possible opening of the CPI. Officially the investigation focuses on the work of NGOs operating in central São Paulo. However, on social media and in interviews, Councilor Nunes has made it clear that the priest is his main target, being critical of his activities.

So much so that the two entities that should be investigated by the CPI, the Nossa Senhora do Bom Parto social centre, known as Bompar, and the Craco Resiste collective, are directly linked to the priest’s work, according to the councillor.

Bompar is a philanthropic organization linked to the Catholic Church, of which Father Júlio was once an advisor, although he is no longer. The Craco Resiste collective works against police violence in the Cracolândia region.

What did Father Júlio Lancellotti say?

Father Júlio stated in an interview with Sheet which is not part of any NGO and is not involved in projects that use public resources. Therefore he sees no reason to be investigated. The situation continues to generate controversy and the development of the investigations requested by the Archdiocese is awaited.

CPI of NGOs

The request to open the CPI was presented by Nunes in December, with the support of 24 councilors. In January, a positive signal came from the leadership of the Chamber for the establishment of the CPI. However, due to the strong negative reaction, some councilors withdrew their support.

In an interview on the program Half day in Brasiliathe author of the request for the establishment of the CPI of NGOs in São Paulo, councilor Rubinho Nunes (União), denied that the investigation had as its sole object the work of Father Júlio Lancellotti in the central region of the capital, especially in Cracolândia .

“Left-wing parliamentarians, especially PT and PSOL, are trying at all costs to protect Father Júlio Lancellotti and to leave aside an important factor, which is the investigation into NGOs. It is not a question of right versus left. This is not it is a politicized issue. The left tries to politicize itself precisely to avoid investigating NGOs”, Nunes said The antagonist.
