Alexandre Farel is the son of Jean, a popular television presenter. Claire, her mother, has left her husband and lives with Adam Wizman, who is also separated from his Jewish and very religious wife with whom he has a daughter, Mila. When Alexandre returns from the United States where he is finishing his studies, he joins his mother for an evening and meets Mila. Together, they decide to go to a party for the former students of the Enrico IV high school. However, the next day, the police arrest Alexandre, accused of raping Mila. “Karine Tuil’s novel had just come out,” recalled director Yvan Attal. “I was interested in the author, of whom I had already read other things, and in her subject: a boy accused of rape following a party. The narrative shocked me. I was moved by the accused (in whom I could see my son), I was moved by the victim (in whom I could see my daughter), I completely identified with the parents of the two young people involved in this news story.”
“I changed the structure of the story – there’s “he”, then “she” and finally the trial – so that the viewer has time to become attached to them. I wanted to know where they came from, who they were, how they both spent the evening preceding the drama, why she believed he had raped her and why he instead believed she had consented. The theme was current, the characters complex. And, for the first time, this book gave me the opportunity to move away from comedy, to find myself in a type of cinema that made me want to make films with elements that I had never had the opportunity to film: a police station, a court, a search, etc.”.
“During the writing of the script, I met judges, policemen and lawyers to understand as much as possible their field of action, their conception of the profession,” continued the director of the Rai 3 film The accusation. “The novel gave me some great dramatic material but I needed to immerse myself in the system, in the arena in which everyone operates. The trial room is the one that left the greatest impression on me: silence reigns there, a very strong tension. It’s not a theater. Lawyers obviously indulge in “performances”, sometimes theatrical, but their goal is to hit hard and convince, because the stakes are very high.”
“I witnessed a rape trial. There, there was no doubt that the man was guilty. But despite everything, there is a human being inside the box and another at the dock. Many lives are at stake and despite all the beliefs and emotions, one comes away shaken. Reading the novel wasn’t enough, I had to live this experience. It’s what guided my staging: staying on the characters for a long time to avoid the superfluous.”
