North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for increased fighting power in a larger war against the United States and South Korea. Kim made the call on Wednesday (March 6) in response to ongoing joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States. This news was reported by the US news agency AP citing the country’s state media.
Kim’s call comes two days after the country’s defense ministry vowed to respond to the drills. North Korea considers such drills by South Korea and the US as a practice attack.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong Un visited a Western operational training base that day. Meanwhile, Kim urged the military to ‘intensify real war exercises’. And for this, he also ordered to ‘improve their combat capability quickly with the aim of perfect war preparation’.
At the time, Kim also said, “Using overwhelming force requires maximum preparation to stop the threat posed by the enemy.”
KCNA reported that Kim directed the maneuvers of military units at the site. However, no details were given in this regard.
Photos released by state media showed Kim standing at the shooting spot, wearing a black leather jacket and pointing a rifle.
Kim has made similar calls for a stronger military in the past. But this time, he made the call two days after the country’s defense ministry threatened to conduct unspecified ‘responsible military operations’.
The South Korean and US militaries began their 11-day annual computer-simulated command post training and field exercises on Monday. They practiced 48 cases in this year’s exercises. This number is twice the number of exercises conducted last year. However, both countries claimed that their exercise was defensive.
However, North Korea has responded to previous military exercises by South Korea and the United States by testing missiles and other weapons.
