SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The water supply crisis has turned life into a nightmare for thousands of Cubans who do not have access to this vital liquid.
A group of residents in Pinar del Río must face a harsh reality to which they have temporarily found a solution that could put their health at risk.
Interviewed by CubaNetPinar del Río residents said that they survive, stay hydrated and wash themselves thanks to the water from a river.
Behind the lack of access to drinking water lies the underlying problem: the lack of electricity. Without electricity, they have no water.
According to Josefa, they often go down to the river to wash. “Thanks to the river we can wash,” she said.
Although she has a washing machine, without electricity she has no way to wash her clothes and no water reaches her house.
They also cannot count on water service by tanker because of the high costs. “If you don’t have 2,500 you can’t even have water to drink.”
To drink, they filter and boil the river water, an operation that they carry out on a wood stove, because without electricity, how are they going to use an electric stove? However, this method does not completely purify the water and could be harmful to health.
Water in Cuba
Just over 8.8 million Cubans have access to water supply infrastructure, through aqueduct networks and pumping stations; the rest receive their water through tankers and “other methods.”
“This infrastructure benefits more than 8.8 million people, with more than 48 percent of them benefiting from a supply system with quality, accessibility and availability indicators that make them systems marked by safe management,” the media reported.
The remaining population must make do with “other means,” which include pipes, wells, and other forms.
Of the 8.8 million people who have access to water, 8.3 million have connections in their homes to receive water. More than 447,000 Cubans receive water in tanker trucks on a permanent basis.
Of the population that benefits from some infrastructure, only half (4 million) have daily water supply service. The rest receive it on alternate days (2 million inhabitants); in a period of three to nine days (1.5 million) and every 10 or more days (566,227 citizens).
