Texas Governor Greg Abbott reveals plan for floating barrier to prevent irregular border crossings

Texas Governor Unveils Plan to Combat Illegal Immigration at the Border

The Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, known for his strong stance against illegal immigration and criticism of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, has announced a new strategy to prevent irregular crossings at the southern border. The plan involves deploying a floating marine barrier along the Rio Grande near the town of Eagle Pass as part of the controversial Lone Star operation.

A New Water Barrier

Speaking at an event in Austin, Governor Abbott said, “It is a new water barrier. We can put mile after mile of these buoys.” The aim is to prevent individuals from reaching the US southern border by protecting it. In the initial phase, the barrier will be placed along the river for 300 meters near Eagle Pass in Maverick County. Abbott was joined by Steven McCraw, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety and Thomas Suelzer, the leader of the Texas National Guard.

Preventing Injury and Loss of Life

McCraw explained that the marine barrier would not only prevent illegal crossings but also protect individuals’ lives. The barrier will minimise the number of people drowning or getting hurt trying to cross. “The governor was concerned about the loss of life in case this would pose a risk to immigrants crossing for family units. The answer is that every time they get into the water, it is a risk for immigrants,” the official said in a statement to CNN.

The buoys used in the barrier were designed and tested by US Border Patrol agents and are mobile and easy to relocate. Though some people may still manage to get through, it will require specialised skills and equipment.

The Cost and Deployment Date

The first phase of the barrier will cost less than a million dollars. The buoys will be anchored on the riverbed and have an approximate height of 1.2 meters, depending on the water level. The initial deployment date of the barrier is July 7th, 2021.

Other Anti-Immigration Laws Passed in Texas

Governor Abbott approved a package of laws that will come into effect on September 1, 2021. The legislation includes:

Mexican Drug Cartel Designation

The law designates Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations in Texas. Governor Abbott sent a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris last year, requesting that Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation be classified as terrorists.

The Use of Drones on the Border

The Texas military will use drones as part of Operation Lone Star to monitor the border under SB 423.

“The Texas Legislature has stepped up to ensure that we continue to respond robustly to President Biden’s growing border crisis, including the allocation of $5.1 billion for border security,” said Governor Abbott in a statement.

Support for Farmers

A support programme of up to $75,000 for farmers whose property has been damaged by people committing a crime at the border such as human traffickers was created.

Penalties for Convertor Theft

Legislation now classifies theft from converters as organized crime. Those who possess stolen catalysts will also commit a crime, and penalties are stronger for those violating the measure.

Street Racing

Street racing will now be considered organised criminal activity. Along with HB 2899, it allows authorities to immediately remove vehicles from the streets.

Ankle Monitoring

A parolee will commit a felony, punishable by state prison if they damage their ankle monitor. The initiative was prompted after a man wearing one opened fire at a Dallas hospital, killing two nurses.

Overall, Texas is taking a proactive stance against illegal immigration and attempting to strengthen its borders whilst also passing laws to protect its citizens.
