Champion of four divisions Terence Crawford let go WBA Champion Belt which he won last year at welterweight. And in return, Terence Crawford will defend his newly acquired WBA super welterweight title, according to an article posted on the sanctioning body’s website.
This is no surprise. Crawford has shown no interest in staying at 145 pounds following his win over Errol Spence last year. Once the undisputed welterweight champion, Crawford was stripped of his IBF belt, became what the WBC called a “champion in recess” and vacated his WBO title.
Instead, Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) moved up to super welterweight and defeated Israil Madrimov four weeks ago to capture the WBA title at that weight. With Crawford no longer the WBA’s top welterweight titleholder, that honor now belongs to Eimantas Stanionis.
Stanionis (15-0, 9 KOs), became the second WBA “regular” titleholder with a split decision win over Radzhab Butaev in April 2022. He made his first defense about two years later, winning a unanimous decision over Gabriel Maestre in the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia fight in May 2024.
The IBF welterweight title now belongs to Jaron “Boots” Ennis, up from the interim world title he won in January 2023. The WBC welterweight title holder is Mario Barrios, who won the interim title in September 2023. And the WBO welterweight belt is around Brian Norman Jr., up from the interim title he won in May 2024.
