Tensions are growing between Brussels and Budapest – 2024-07-17 18:12:35

Disagreements continue between Hungary, which will hold the presidency of the European Union on July 1, and the EU. The reason is fundamental issues such as the supremacy of the right of association and Ukraine’s membership.

Publika.az reports that the ministers responsible for European affairs of the EU countries met in Luxembourg at the last meeting within the framework of the Belgian presidency.

Belgium, which has been in this position since January 1, will hand over its chairmanship powers to Hungary on July 1. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, Hadja Lahbib, said that the ministers will also discuss the latest situation regarding the procedure implemented against Hungary for violating EU laws.

Hungarian Minister for European Affairs János Bóka commented on the violation procedure applied against his country: “The Article 7 procedure became a political issue in the European Parliament election campaign and was used as a tool of political pressure to force Hungary. I hope to be able to make the discussion more objective and constructive after the election, but I don’t have much hope. Still, we will never give up.”

It should be noted that Hungary has been criticized by the EU for exercising excessive control over the judicial system and restricting basic rights and freedoms in the country. Last week, the European Court of Justice fined Hungary 200 million euros for violating the asylum law.
