Telephone scams with loot of 105,000 euros in Ioannina

After a methodical investigation by the Security Sub-Directorate of Ioannina, the elements of the country were identified, against which a criminal case was filed for the offenses of joining a criminal organization and subsequent frauds.

The native was located and arrested in Ioannina.

In particular, as it was established, the arrested woman was a member of a criminal organization, in which at least three other people participated.

Specifically, at least since 5/2/2024, a member of the organization made surprise calls to telephone connections – mainly of elderly people – in Ioannina and, after impersonating the hospital doctor, assigned another member (male or female, as the case may be) to impersonate a close relative their person (usually their child) and beg for financial help in order to allegedly undergo surgery, due to an alleged serious car accident he had suffered.

As it turned out, the arrested woman was tasked with finding information about the family and financial situation of potential victims, who would then be called by her accomplices, as well as with receiving the money from their home, in the event that some of them were convinced .

With the above method of action, the organization managed to defraud 5 elderly women, extracting the total amount of money of 105,650 euros, while they tried to defraud at least two more, expecting an additional financial benefit of 60,000 euros.

As part of the investigations, the arrested woman’s car was confiscated, as a means of facilitating her actions, as well as a mobile phone.

The arrested woman was taken to the Criminal Prosecutor of Ioannina, while the investigation of the Security Sub-Directorate of Ioannina for the identification of the remaining members and their possible involvement in similar cases continues.
