The incident has profoundly shaken the community of Payerne and, more particularly, the children of the Payerne-Corcelles school and surrounding areas. On October 11, 2022, a teacher was violently hit by an SUV in the middle of Grand-Rue, while she had stopped at the pedestrian crossing to take her 9 and 10-year-old pupils to safety.

The driver in question has just been convicted by the Northern Vaud Prosecutor’s Office for serious bodily injury due to negligence. Although he endangered the life of this owner and traumatized the children who witnessed the tragedy, his sentence remains proportionate to the crime committed: carelessness, we learn from the sentencing provision.

Moderate speed

Investigations revealed that at the time of the accident the sixty-year-old was not under the influence of any substance and was traveling at a speed of approximately fifteen km/h. He explained that he looked to the left shortly before the impact and did not see the teacher position himself on the other side of the road. He received a 120-day fine for grievous bodily harm through negligence, with a lengthy five-year suspended sentence.

The teacher, who violently hit his head on the bonnet of the car, was thrown 6.50 m from safe passage. She was taken to CHUV in critical condition, suffering from severe brain trauma and multiple injuries to her face and skull. She underwent 75 days of hospitalization and was only able to return to work in March 2023, gradually increasing her activity rate until it reached 30% in May, without knowing when she would be able to resume 100% activity.
