Taxi fares in Sofia will increase in price by 18.6% from January 1, 2026. On Thursday, the Sofia Municipal Council approved an increase in the minimum and maximum prices for this service. This will automatically lead to higher prices, as almost all companies currently drive at the minimum or very close to the minimum fare.
The proposal to increase tariffs passed with 32 votes “for”, 4 “against” and 3 “abstentions”.
Thus, the minimum daily tariff increases from BGN 1.21 to BGN 1.43 per kilometer, and the maximum from BGN 2.05 to BGN 2.43 per kilometer. The night rate increases from BGN 1.39 per kilometer to BGN 1.65 per kilometer. The maximum price at night becomes BGN 2.98 per kilometer compared to BGN 2.51 at the moment.
The councilors from “Save Sofia” were mainly against the proposal. According to them, the taxi companies can increase their rates even now, since they are already operating at the minimum prices. According to them, this raises suspicions of a cartel in the market.
They wanted a much more drastic increase in prices from the industry – by more than 40 percent. However, the local authority proposed that the indexation of tariffs be done according to a formula that includes inflation, the growth of the minimum wage and fuel prices.
