Taiwan earthquake will not affect global electronics supply chain – ICEA

New Delhi: A day after a massive earthquake struck Taiwan, a key supplier of chips and displays to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), industry leaders on Thursday said there will be no impact on the global supply chain serving mobile phones and other electronics. Will have to. India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo told IANS that Taiwan is a very flexible country.

“We do not expect any adverse impact on the supply chain of mobiles and electronics,” Mohindru said. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC), the island nation’s largest chipmaker, reported that more than 70 percent of its chip-manufacturing operations were back online within 10 hours of the earthquake. The major Apple supplier also said no critical machines were damaged after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan, Nikkei Asia reported. The earthquake also sent shock waves through the western part of the island, which is home to technology centres.

Taiwan has a large stake in critical components of the technology industry, including semiconductors, chip substrates and printed circuit boards. Graphics chip giant Nvidia also said it does not expect the Taiwan earthquake to affect its supplies. TSMC has reportedly installed shock absorbers in its chip-making facilities that can help reduce vibrations by 15-20 percent.
