One of the many contenders on Sunday is Laurens Sweeck. The Crelan-Corendon driver finished third last weekend in Zonhoven. A boost after a very negative season.
“All the minor performances of this season have not been erased. Zonhoven’s course suited me well. I did my best for a while, but bad luck often put a spanner in the works. It’s already improving, but I’m Still looking for a constant. There isn’t one.”
Sweeck has already reached the podium six times in the Belgian Championship. In 2020 as a champion. He dreams about it too now. “I don’t deny that I am one of the four candidates for victory. This together with Iserbyt, Vanthourenhout and Nys.”
“I haven’t managed to win a cross this season, but the other three have. So I’m further ahead. Naturally I’d like to go around wearing that tricolor shirt again. That shirt means a lot.”
“I haven’t explored the route in Meulebeke yet. In the next few days the route will change due to freezing cold and thaw. But if I have good legs, I can participate for the prizes.”
Can team play play a role? “A title is never given away. You can help a teammate, perhaps by staying in the leading group and making the others nervous.”
“My chances of winning? I’m one of the four favourites, let me stop there,” laughs Laurens Sweeck.
