Suspects in the shooting against Maria at Campislaan Assen: “We were attacked”

Two Assen residents (21 and 27 years old), who admitted shooting during a mass shooting on October 4 in the Asser residential area of Lariks, acted in self-defense. According to the two they should have defended themselves from the next victim. They were attacked with a samurai sword.

The lawyers of the suspects said this during the second brief introductory hearing on the case.

Both suspects wanted to return home and the lawyers asked the court to grant it, under certain conditions. The residents of Assen have promised the judge to respect these conditions, but the judge believes that the matter is too serious at this time to release them. It is not yet sufficiently established for the judge that an emergency defense exists.

The victim, 24, suffered five gunshot wounds to the groin, abdomen, back and leg during the violent incident which took place in broad daylight in Maria in Campislaan. He was then seriously injured and taken to hospital in Groningen. The victim is said to have recently thrown stones at the car of one of the suspects. The owner of the car and his younger brother wanted to seek compensation.

Seven people involved then went in two cars to the place where they met the last victim. He attacked them with a samurai sword, the 27-year-old’s lawyer from Assen told the court. The suspect allegedly warned and then shot.

The 21-year-old suspect only fired into the air, he said. Initially he didn’t want to say anything to the police, but then he gave in. For example, gunpowder residues were found on his hands and those of the co-investigator, 27 years old. The 21-year-old from Assen is still being examined by a psychologist.
