Surrender to rebels, 3 brigadier generals executed in Myanmar – 2024-02-19 23:19:38

Myanmar’s military government has sentenced three brigadier generals to death for defeating the rebels. A military source said on Monday (February 19) that the sentence follows the surrender of hundreds of troops to ethnic rebels in a key city near the Chinese border last month. French news agency AFP reported.

Three brigadier generals, including the commander of Laukkai town, were sentenced to death, military sources said on condition of anonymity.

Another military source also confirmed the death sentence.

Hundreds of troops surrendered to the rebels in northern Shan State in January after an attack by the so-called Three Brotherhood Alliance. One of the country’s biggest military defeats in decades. In this incident, the junta came under criticism in the country. Since seizing power in a coup in 2021, the army has been struggling to deal with pro-democracy and armed rebels.

After the surrender, the rebels allowed the army officers and soldiers to leave the area.

However, the two Myanmar military sources did not tell AFP in detail when the verdict was handed down.

Earlier last month, a spokesman for the country’s army confirmed that three brigadier generals were in military custody.

Under Myanmar’s military law, leaving the workplace without permission carries a maximum penalty of death.

AFP could not reach a junta spokesman for comment.
