Mumbai: Adhyayan Suman is receiving a lot of praise for his role of Zorawar Ali Khan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi. After a series of failures and lack of opportunities, Adhyayan Suman is finally happy with the love that the Netflix series is giving him. Now, in an interview with Instant Bollywood, he shared that the long wait for such a meaty role has been “frustrating”. Adhyayan said that many organizations had also warned Sanjay Leela Bhansali against casting him in the period drama. “It’s very frustrating…people make assumptions about you that ‘he doesn’t want to work’ or ‘he’s not serious,'” he said. I have heard him myself… I once asked Sanjay sir, when I was having lunch with him, ‘Sir, why did you want to take me on the show.’ It turned out that people had asked me not to cast me.
Adhyayan Suman also said that Richa Chadha had sent her a voice note after shooting with her on the first day. Regarding the message Adhyayan Suman said, “It is very personal so I will not go into details. He said, ‘I had this prejudice against you because people used to say that he (Adhyayan Suman) is bad, he is a star kid, he doesn’t want to work.’ She said, ‘Adhyayan, I am angry at myself now that I once believed in this. But when I saw your dedication and passion towards work and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s recognition of your work, my entire perception changed. “It was very kind of him to do that.”
Adhyayan Suman also mentioned that upon collaborating with him, many people expressed surprise, expecting him to be arrogant, but found him to be quite the opposite. “I said, ‘Why would I be arrogant? What do I have? Even if I had something, why would I be arrogant… I’m down to earth.’ I have seen success and failure, I have learned a lot of lessons.”
He said such comments about him are “heartbreaking” and that he is working to change the misconceptions surrounding him.
About being cast in the show, Adhyayan Suman had earlier told News18, “I got a call from Shruti Mahajan (casting director) to audition for the character of Zoravar. I was celebrating my parents’ wedding anniversary somewhere in the Himalayas. When I was traveling there I got a call. At one o’clock in the afternoon I was told that Mr. Bhansali would see my audition at three o’clock. Somehow, I managed to stop the car in the middle of the mountains and made an audition clip while sitting in the car. I begged, borrowed and stole some networks from people and sent the tapes. Unfortunately I did not get this role. Honestly, if I had auditioned and didn’t get a role in another filmmaker’s film or series, I would have just let it go. But this was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s show and working with him is every actor’s dream. So, I was extremely disappointed that it didn’t work for me.”
But things soon changed for Adhyayan Suman. He shared: “My father always tells me that if something is meant to happen, it will happen and no one can take away what is destined to happen. The shooting of Heeramandi started along with other characters. Two days before we were to start shooting with the actor who was to play Zorawar, he was suddenly asked to leave and I was brought in. It’s amazing how it all happened.
Heeramandi, which revolves around the lives of the courtiers of pre-independent India’s Lahore, is available for streaming on Netflix.
