Subsidies for Kazakh farmers using water-saving technologies have been increased from 50% to 80%, Liter.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
As the department notes, increasing subsidies by 30 percent will help farmers finance the purchase of advanced irrigation systems and the construction of the necessary infrastructure.
“This support measure was developed by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation together with the Ministry of Agriculture, reflecting the basic need of agriculture for water resources, which accounts for 60% of the total water consumption in the country. As part of this initiative, the Ministry also proposed other measures to encourage farmers to use water more efficiently. Included are proposals for the introduction of a new Water Code, which includes government subsidies and reduced water tariffs, varying depending on the water-saving technologies implemented and the types of crops grown. In addition, the volume of subsidies for drilling wells has also been increased to 80%,” – it says in a message dated May 31.
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov emphasized that the use of water-saving technologies is expanding throughout the country in accordance with the plan until 2030, which provides for a reduction in water use by 2.1 billion cubic meters per year, covering more than half of the irrigated land with technologies.
