Subianto elected Indonesian president, rivals accuse of fraud – 2024-03-21 22:20:43

Defense Minister Praboyo Subianto has been elected as the next president of Indonesia. The Election Commission of the country officially announced the results on Wednesday (March 20) night. However, his two rivals, Anis Baswedan and Ganjar Pranoyo, have announced to go to court, alleging election fraud. The British media reported the news.

Just last month, unofficial results in the election declared Subianto and his vice president, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the winners. However, they were officially declared the winners yesterday. Election Commission said they got 58.59 percent votes in the election. Gibran Rakabuming Raka is the eldest son of current President Joko Widodo.

According to Indonesian rules, if a candidate fails to secure 50 percent of the vote in the first round, the election is held in a second round. Subianto avoided it.

The 72-year-old former general will take over from Joko Widodo in October.

Although Subianto has been accused of human rights abuses for decades; Still, he has campaigned through social media, especially Tik Tok videos.

In his victory speech to supporters after being officially declared the winner, Subianto said that as president and vice president, they will work hard for the people of Indonesia.

Subianto’s two rivals in the election, former governor of Jakarta Anis Baswedan, got more than 24.9 percent and former governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranoyo, got more than 16 percent. Both of them accused of fraud in the election and said that they will complain to the Constitutional Court about this irregularity.

In addition to presidential elections, Indonesia also held elections for members of parliament and regional lawmakers last month. More than 164 million people voted in this year’s presidential election.
