Construction on the climate-friendly complete renovation of the stadium will begin in June 2024. The reopening is planned for the traditional club’s 120th birthday in spring 2026.
Vienna (OTS) – Over the next two years, the stadium of the Vienna Sports Club in the 17th district will receive a new and modern look according to sustainable standards, an increased overall capacity and a variety of new uses. Construction on the complete renovation of Austria’s oldest football pitch still in use will begin in June 2024.
Local councilor Kurt Stürzenbecher (SPÖ), chairman of the local council committee for finance, economics, labour, international affairs and Vienna public utilities and local councilor for Hernals, emphasizes: “Today’s local council decision and the approved investments are a commitment to sport in Vienna. With the climate-friendly modernization, the Vienna Sports Club in Hernals will have a sustainable home for international games. The impact goes far beyond sport. As a meeting place for different generations, the sports club has always had a high, unifying social function.”
The main stand (west stand) and the cemetery stand (north stand) will be rebuilt according to modern and sustainable standards, the away stand (south stand) will be renovated. A head building will be built between the two new stands. Vienna focuses on sustainability and measures against climate change in all projects. For this reason, a contemporary energy concept is also being implemented in the new construction, conversion and renovation of the Vienna Sport Club Stadium. The creation of renewable energy (photovoltaics) with an output of around 100,000 kWh and the renewal of the floodlight system to LED and the playing field, as well as the complete operating equipment, are important measures for a sustainable concept during the renovation. The roofs of the stands will be covered in greenery. In combination with the heat pump system, a largely self-sufficient supply is made possible. This means that the facility is fit for the future from a sporting, safety and ecological perspective.
The total capacity after the renovation is 5,649 visitors for national games and 4,634 visitors for international games. With the design of the modernization according to the “UEFA Category 2” standard, it is possible to hold games for the women’s national soccer team and all youth national teams (women and men). The enlarged playing field will enable international football and rugby games to be held in the future. The newly planned head building can also ensure cultural events and the possible use of seminar and office space.
Stürzenbecher emphasizes: “The stadium will be sustainable, climate-friendly and offer long-term stability for the traditional Hernals club, which has an impressively positive fan culture. The expanded use of the entire area allows the ball to continue rolling on the historic lawn for a long time to come.” (Conclusion) ew/sh
