Bregenz (OTS) – A recent mental health study shows that parents of children with special needs are under greater psychological stress and need more support for their mental health. Because: The psychological state of parents has a surprisingly high impact on their children. The results of the Vorarlberg research project by aks Wissenschaft and aks Children’s Services were published in the journal “Frontiers in Public Health”. The study was funded by the state of Vorarlberg.
“The study results show that parents of children with special needs are more psychologically stressed
“, emphasizes Susanne Bauer, medical director of aks children’s services. 7.9% of parents meet the criteria for current depression, compared to 4.7% of the Vorarlberg general population. 7.3% meet the criteria for generalized anxiety disorder.
In addition, a connection was found between parents’ depression and anxiety symptoms with psychological symptoms and behavior in their children: 17% of the children of depressed parents showed increased scores in the area of aggressive behavior, 9% had increased media consumption and 15% had an increased proportion of sleep problems on. Similar numbers were found among parents with anxiety symptoms.
After the publication of the study results, child and adolescent psychiatrist Susanne Bauer sees a need for action to offer parents quick and uncomplicated support: “The task of supporting parents could, for example, be undertaken by a coordination office in collaboration with doctors and stakeholders.”
