Study indicates that cannabis components could prevent covid-19 infections

Medical marijuana has been very popular in recent times and studies have shown that it is effective in some treatments. In a world that continues to face Covid-19 and that is looking for better alternatives to prevent infections every day, cannabis is once again presented as a possible solution.

According to a study conducted by teams from Oregon State University and Oregon Health and Science University, components of cannabis can bind with the ‘Spike’ protein, characteristic of Covid-19, which would help prevent the virus from adhering to healthy human cells.

“This means that cell entry inhibitors, such as hemp acids, could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells,” said Richard van Breemen, a researcher at the Hemp Innovation Center.

The study was published by the ‘Journal of Natural Products’ and reveals that the acids that would be effective against the coronavirus are cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA).

These compounds, widely present in hemp, can be taken orally, blocking the Alpha and Beta variants of the coronavirus.

Although the research focused on these two variants, researchers believe that the acids mentioned would be equally effective with the other existing variants.

It is important to note that the research does not suggest or encourage smoking cannabis as a way to prevent COVID-19, but that CBGA and CBDA are components that can be considered as alternatives to find a useful medicine to counteract coronavirus infections or at least help fight the virus.

The study provides a first finding that will require further research, but it represents a major step forward and demonstrates the many uses that marijuana can have to promote health.
