Clara Bonelli from Franziskus GYM Wels takes first place in the EU translation competition
Vienna (OTS) – The best young translators in Europe are chosen every year in the EU competition “Juvenes Translatores”. The texts in this year’s 17th round of the competition revolved around civil society commitment and again required young people from all EU countries to have linguistic talent and fluent phrasing. In Austria, a student from Franziskus GYM Wels took first place: Clara Bonelli was able to convince the jury with her successful translation from French into German.
EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn said: “I warmly congratulate the winners of the 2023 Juvenes Translatores competition! Congratulations also to all 3,056 young translators who took part across the EU – you are all winners. It is more important now than ever to better understand the culture and viewpoints of others.”
Clara Bonelli prevailed against 81 language enthusiasts from 19 Austrian schools; Across the EU, almost 3,100 17-year-old students took part – in a language combination of their choice. Of the 552 possible combinations from all EU languages, 155 were chosen across the EU in this round. This year in Austria, participants translated from 13 different languages. The target language was mostly German, but also English and French.
As a prize, the top 27 winners will receive a multi-day trip to Brussels: at the end of March they will go to the EU capital, where the award ceremony with EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn as well as visits to the EU institutions and the EU Commission’s translation service are on the program.
Six young language enthusiasts narrowly missed out on victory in Austria: Anna-Sophie Pfeifer and Sophie Holzschuh from BG/BRG Hollabrunn, Adriana Bauer-Klucaric and Clementine Metternich from BG/BRG Korneuburg, Franziska Wallner from BG/BRG Lilienfeld and Konradas Plytnikas from BRG/ VBS 14 Linzerstrasse. They receive an award for their very good performance.
Annual competition since 2007
The “Juvenes Translatores” (Latin for “young translators”) competition has been organized annually since 2007 by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation. The competition promotes the learning of foreign languages in schools and gives young people an impression of what it means to be a translator.
Multilingualism and therefore translation have had a permanent place in the EU since the founding of the communities. The language regime was the subject of the very first regulation in 1958 (Council Regulation (EEC) No 1). Since then, the number of official languages has increased from 4 to 24 with the EU enlargements.
