ANPVuurwerk during a New Year’s Eve in Maasdam
NOS Nieuws·vandaag, 8.29pm
New Year’s Eve could be accompanied by the same climate as recent days. So with a lot of wind and occasional showers. Fireworks show organizers carefully monitor weather forecasts.
Last year the fireworks displays were canceled due to bad weather. The big show at the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam was canceled and in Amsterdam no fireworks were fired during the light show on Museumplein.
This year, the organizer of both festivals hopes fireworks will be possible.
Wind river
NOS meteorologist Willemijn Hoebert talks about “a coming and going of low pressure areas” that bring a lot of wind. There’s a jet stream. “It’s a kind of wind river at an altitude of about 10 kilometers. It’s close to us and ensures that low pressure areas come towards us.”
There is a good chance that it will also be very windy on New Year’s Eve and there could be strong gusts of wind. But this is not at all certain. “The situation is still subject to change. For example, if such a front appears in the afternoon, it may be clearer and calmer in the evening.” More certainties may be given over the weekend.
No smog
In any case, Hoebert believes the fireworks will create little smog. “It can form when it is calm, but the weather is not exactly calm. Smoke from fireworks is mixed by the wind with other layers of air, which means there is less chance of smog forming.
The temperature on New Year’s Eve is probably as mild as today: around 8-9 degrees and there is a chance of showers across the country.
“You can still see the light”
A spokesperson for the organization of the main fireworks and light shows in Amsterdam and Rotterdam says that the fireworks displays will be canceled if the wind force is consistently above 5. A wind force of between 4 and 5 is currently forecast. “So we keep our fingers crossed,” he told the ANP news agency.
We are also still waiting for the Hague fireworks display at the Hofvijver. If the wind is too strong, the fireworks there will not go into the air, but there will still be a light and laser show. The light show also continues in Amsterdam even when the wind is strong.
Even the organizers of the annual bonfires in The Hague only decide later whether they can burn or not. If all goes well, the bonfires will be lit on December 31st at midnight. Last year this happened a day early because it was too windy on New Year’s Eve.
