Bad weather will continue today in some provinces of the country, where the National Meteorological Service (SMN) maintains yellow alerts for low temperatures and strong winds.
The yellow warning for winds applies to the mountainous area of Salta, Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan, to the south of Chubut and all of Santa Cruz and all of Tierra del Fuego. “The area will be affected by northwesterly winds, with speeds between 50 and 65 km/h, with gusts that can reach 100 km/h, especially in the higher altitude areas,” the national agency details in its daily report.
On the other hand, the cold will be felt more intensely in San Juan, where the yellow alert remains in effect.
Part of Argentina on alert for the arrival of a “category 5 extreme atmospheric river”
Santa Cruz will be affected in the next few hours by an extreme category atmospheric river, loaded with humidity and forecast to leave very heavy rains and gusts that could exceed 150 km/h. This phenomenon arrived on Sunday with category 5, which is the maximum possible, in the area known as Campo de Hielo Sur.
The upcoming meteorological event could cause serious problems in the region where the largest continental ice sheet in the world is located, located on the border between Argentina and Chile, including landslides, avalanches and significant increases in river flow. Between Sunday and Tuesday, more than 200 mm of rain could fall in the border area.
