Special Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic, Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, discussed with the Director-General of the Department of West Asia and North Africa at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Di, and the accompanying delegation, areas of joint cooperation and their future prospects.
During today’s meeting, a set of topics related to enhancing cooperation in various fields and initiatives put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping over the past years related to international security, human civilization, and economic growth, in addition to the Belt and Road Initiative, were reviewed.
Dr. Shaaban said: President Bashar al-Assad considered his meeting with President Xi Jinping a very important and historic meeting, and it brought about a qualitative shift in relations leading to a strategic partnership, stressing the need to enhance the steps of work between the two countries to raise the level of the relationship further.
Dr. Shaaban stressed that relations between Syria and China have developed greatly in recent years, noting that the relationship with China is important for all developing countries, not just for Syria, and it is necessary to further strengthen this partnership in various fields during the coming stage with the major changes in the international situation and the emergence of China’s role.
Shaaban pointed out that the United States of America and the Israeli occupation failed to marginalize Syria’s role with regard to Palestine and with the Arab countries, despite all the attempts they made, because Syria’s policy was based on principles and constants and does not change with the passage of time.
Regarding the Israeli aggression on Gaza, Dr. Shaaban stressed that Syria’s opinion touches the pulse of the Arab people in all Arab countries, and that what is happening in Palestine is a war of extermination and ethnic cleansing that aims to end the Palestinian cause, displace the Palestinian people and seize their land. It constitutes an additional stigma in the history of the West and the United States, and that all this is happening at a time when the international community stands by as a spectator and does nothing.
Dr. Shaaban pointed out that Syria believes that the goal of this aggression is to terrorize the rising powers in the world, such as China, Russia, and the BRICS countries, which have begun to take an advanced position on the international scene, and that the aircraft carriers and submarines that the United States is deploying are aimed at sending a message to the global balance and not to a few resistance fighters, as evidenced by the fact that America used its veto in the Security Council against stopping the aggression on Gaza.
Dr. Shaaban explained that the Arabs today say: Syria is right in all the principles it adhered to.
For his part, the Director General of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Di, stressed that the relations between Syria and China are distinguished, and have witnessed great development as a result of the common and fundamental ideas between the two countries, noting that China is ready to develop cooperation to reach new and distinguished positive results, which will be reflected in the interests of the two peoples with great benefit.
The meeting was attended by Shi Hongwei, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Damascus, and Zoe Pan, Head of the Department of West Asia and North Africa at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
