The challenges and opportunities that Cesar faces in key sectors such as coffee growing, cereals and tourism are raised by the candidate for the Governor of Cesar, Kaleb Villalobos Brochel, in his goal of leading the reins of the department.
He highlights the importance of supporting local coffee producers, promoting the quality and sustainability of their crops, stating: “We will invest science and technology in coffee trees because it has been historically proven that where there is no knowledge the economy perishes.”
Villalobos Brochel contemplates the first two coffee farms to reactivate tourism: one in the Serranía de Perijá managed by Yukpas and another in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta managed by Arhuacos, who will teach coffee grinding to tourists, but will also teach them their culture. This is what is called ‘cultural tourism’ combined with ‘experience tourism’, which today pays very well in other latitudes.
The rice issue also occupies a central place in Kaleb’s government plan. The candidate for the ASI party speaks about the need for policies that promote food security and support for local farmers.
“We will develop Municipal Supply Centers with agricultural price support schemes. We must set up cereal production clusters and encourage cereal producers to add value to their activities and transform their raw materials into processed products,” he explains.
On the other hand, it refers to the challenges of tourism, represented by Cotelco (Hotel and Tourism Association of Colombia), ensuring that it is a growing sector in Cesar, which is why it seeks to promote the region as an attractive tourist destination, to which considers collaboration between the government and the private sector necessary.
“We want to build three ecoparks in Cesar: the Guatapurí River Ecopark, in the north; the Ciénaga de la Zapatosa Ecopark, in the center; and the El Agüil Forest Ecopark, in the south; in order to boost the economy of Cesar, so that those who visit us have attractive places to spend the night in our lands,” he emphasizes.
The regional leader of the ASI party adds: “During the entire life of this department we have seen thousands of tourists pass through from the interior of the country; They enter through San Alberto and leave for the beaches without staying at Cesar because we have not been able to build them an adequate tourist infrastructure that guarantees that they stay at least two days here. This situation must change with ecotourism strategies that include adventure sports, hiking, bird watching and enjoying a natural landscape.”
