Moroccan researcher Al-Mahdi Mustaqim has published the Arabic translation of the French philosopher Patrice Vermarin’s book “Philosophy as Conceived by UNESCO” by the House of Philosophy Publications – Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, for the year 2024.
Data on the publication indicated that “Philosophy as Conceived by UNESCO” is a work that tells the story of philosophy’s relationship with UNESCO, not only in its contemplative or normative form, but also in its form based on the critical question that allows for the possibilities of giving meaning to life and action in a global context.
The same sources added that “UNESCO was born from the question of the conditions for the emergence of a world of sustainable peace and security, and accordingly it is an institutional answer to a philosophical question previously raised by Charles Irène, Castel de Saint-Pierre and Kant. Moreover, it can be said that it is an independent philosophical institution, given that it proposes itself as a party concerned with contributing to the preservation of peace and security.”
The same data stated that “UNESCO does not adopt a specific type of philosophy, in the true sense of the word, given that it is an institution that aspires to be the preferred space for exchange and dialogue, and for the diversity of intellectual experiences and cultures of the world. Therefore, it can be said that UNESCO is in itself a kind of philosophy.”
The data on the publication indicated that “UNESCO’s constant reliance on the memory of its traditions is what enabled it to reinvent its present in loyalty to its constitutional instrument,” adding that “one of the possible readings of this tradition is the one proposed by Patrice Vermeren, through his work on spreading philosophy as UNESCO envisions it.”
