Stormy night in West Frisia, but without major flooding

Storm Henk and high water caused a stormy evening and night in West Frisia. Extreme water levels up to 75 centimeters above the NAP, as near Enkhuizen, appeared to be a recipe for annoyance. But some flooded areas near the coast are an exception.

It was happening in Visserseiland in Hoorn early in the evening. Completely against expectations, water is rising in the street. Local residents join forces and place additional sandbags in front of the doors. “We never had water on the sidewalks before, but now we do,” said resident Ingrid Maas.

Meanwhile, silence reigns in Enkhuizen, apart from the strong wind. The water laps the closed Sassluis, but this does not create problems.

This afternoon at the Broekerhaven in Bovenkarspel further measures have been taken. For example, the bicycle tunnel was closed with sandbags to prevent water from flowing into the harbor in extreme conditions.

At around 10.30pm the water level in the area peaks at 75 centimeters above the NAP. For comparison, more than a foot above the NAP is considered extremely high water. The water flows onto the shore, among other places, on Van der Meulen beach, as well as on the harbor side outside the dike. But nowhere near the cycle tunnel.

Around midnight peace returned to Visserseiland. There is still a lot of water, but still quite far from the houses on the street. Early tomorrow morning the municipality will place extra large sandbags.

Hoorn is preparing for the next peak of high water

“Rijkswaterstaat could expect another peak of high water on Friday or Saturday, which could be higher than in the last few days. This is because the wind turns towards the north-east and it is not yet possible to drain from the Markermeer to the IJsselmeer. If the forecast comes true, the current measures are not sufficient”, reads the note.

Around 00:30 the water flowing in Bovenkarspel also seems to have calmed down a bit. It is still blowing strongly with a force 8 wind. But the water level in the IJsselmeer near Enkhuizen has dropped to 50 centimeters. Still high, but decidedly lower than a few hours earlier. Water is expected to decline further.
