STIP cadet dies after being assaulted by senior, new student admissions stopped

JAKARTA – Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi responded to the murder case resulting from violence committed by seniors against juniors at the Maritime Science College (STIP).

“We deeply regret the incident of violence at STIP Jakarta. This is a deep sorrow and has become a point that we have to make changes. We will carry out reforms in vocational education under the auspices of the Ministry of Transportation,” said the Minister of Transportation in an official statement, Friday (10/ 5/2024).

The Minister of Transportation said that his party had taken several concrete steps to make improvements at STIP. In the short term, STIP Jakarta student admissions have been temporarily stopped.

“Apart from that, it also prohibits the sharing of activities that can encourage bullying, including eliminating senior and junior ranks and designations in schools,” added the Minister of Transportation.

Then in the medium term, digital-based reports that reduce physical interactions will be optimized, by improving the quality of cadet caregivers, as well as separating cadet interactions between forces and eliminating uniform attributes.

The Minister of Transportation said that improvements would also be made at other schools under the auspices of the Ministry of Transportation. “In the long term, similar improvements will be implemented in other schools under the BPSDM of the Ministry of Transportation,” said the Minister of Transportation.

The Minister of Transportation expressed his commitment to make schools under the Ministry of Transportation schools that produce quality transportation people, both in terms of expertise and skills and people who are virtuous and have morals. To realize this commitment, the Ministry of Transportation will solicit input from various parties, including education experts and transportation experts.

Internally, the Ministry of Transportation will make fundamental improvements, namely by changing the curriculum to focus on classroom learning and prioritizing soft skills which will later be able to support graduates ready to work in the world of maritime and shipping.
