La Fuga Teatro presents its latest production, “Stella,” a work that pays tribute to the outstanding Chilean poet Stella Díaz Varín. Known as “The Punk Poet,” “The Chilean Bukowski,” or “The Boxing Poet,” Stella Díaz Varín stood out for her unique voice and her impact on Chilean and Latin American poetry of the last century.
STELLA is the second installment of the trilogy of Chilean underground authors. La Fuga; performing arts, dedicated to highlighting Chilean literary figures, this time focusing on the poet Stella
Díaz Varín, affectionately known as “La Colorina”, the work seeks to explore the impulse of the sentimental impulse that permeates her life and work. From her debut in 1949 with “Razón de mi ser” to the Pedro de Oña Prize in 1993, Stella’s poetry leaves an indelible mark.
This theatrical proposal is a tribute to the figure of the poet, framed within the broader strategy of “La Fuga” to rescue underestimated literary voices in Chile.
Four actresses face the challenge of personifying Stella Díaz Varín, defying conventional labels and immersing the audience in an emotional journey through the words and passions of the poet. The staging invites us to an exciting journey through the
words and passions that defined Díaz Varín, revealing both the poet’s internal conflicts and the external challenges she faced in her life.
About Stella Díaz Varín:
The life of Stella Díaz Varín is a fascinating story that is uniquely intertwined with her outstanding poetic work. This iconic figure of Latin American poetry of the last century left an indelible mark on the literature and culture of her time. Known by various nicknames, such as “the punk poet,” “the Chilean Bukowski,” and “the boxing poet,” Stella was much more than a writer; she was a force of nature.
Born in La Serena, Stella Díaz Varín began her literary journey at an early age. In 1949, she published her first book, “Razón de mi ser,” marking the beginning of a prolific career as a poet. This title was followed by notable works such as “Sinfonía del hombre fósil,” “Tiempo, medida imaginaria,” and “Los Dones Previsibles.” Each of her poetic creations was a testament to her deep introspection and her ability to capture the complexity of human existence in words.
Despite her origins in La Serena, Stella Díaz Varín soon moved to Santiago at the age of 17 to study psychiatry. However, her destiny took her on a different path as she became an emblematic figure of her literary generation. It was during her time in Santiago that she befriended literary giants such as Pablo Neruda, Enrique Lihn, Alejandro Jodorowski, and Nicanor Parra.
