The establishment of a Union The bill presented yesterday to the Council of Ministers by the Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias provides for an IT Corps with a special unit to deal with cyber attacks. A unit called “Unit 1864” will be established and its mission will be to protect the Armed Forces and the public sector in general from cyber threats.

The same bill includes the establishment of a Hellenic Innovation Development Center and the modernization of the institutional framework of the Higher Military Educational Institutions by upgrading the education they provide, with access to doctorates – research.

In the presentation of the draft law that will be put out for public consultation and it is a piece of legislation that concerns a new phase in the “Agenda 2030” of the Armed Forces, regarding the Unified Informatics Corps of the three Branches of the Armed Forces that will be under the GEETHA, it was emphasized that the aim will be the adaptation, prevention and timely response of the digital infrastructures of the EDs to cyber security challenges and the mission will be the training of executives in cyber defense operations, software development for the needs of the EDs and network management to prevent cyber threats.

In this context, there will be the establishment of an Informatics Department at the Military Corps Officers’ School (SSAS), the possibility of studying and further training of corps officers in the Informatics Departments of HEIs and the possibility of reassignment of specialized officers of the ED.

There will be interconnection of Unit 1864 with GEETHA and its Informatics Directorate, the staffs of the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Informatics departments of the Commands and Formations of the Armed Forces. Unit 1864 will communicate with the Big Data department and the Artificial Intelligence department.

“The bill will go to public consultation, it is a piece of legislation that primarily concerns a new phase in the “2030 Agenda” of the Armed Forces, namely the introduction of innovation. The Hellenic Innovation Center will be created, which will unite the needs of the Armed Forces with new technology, as well as with the ecosystem of Greece’s defense businesses. From there on, we will create an IT Corps, with a special Cyber ​​Security Directorate, we call it “Unit 1864″, to protect the Armed Forces, but also the Greek public sector in general, from the threats of the new era” said Nikos Dendias after the completion of the Council of Ministers.
