Sputnik V has become the world’s first coronavirus vaccine with proven efficacy for HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART), the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology announced on Monday, citing the results of a study published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet.
To assess vaccine effectiveness, data from 24,423 vaccinated and unvaccinated patients receiving ART from the Moscow Center for AIDS Prevention and Control were used.
According to the results of the study, the efficacy of the Russian drug against Covid-19 is 79.42%, while the effectiveness in preventing hospitalization and the development of disease, with moderate or severe symptoms, is 90.12% and 97.06%, respectively.
The authors of the study also noted that full immunization with the Russian vaccine led to a 3.3-fold reduction in the number of coronavirus infections compared to unvaccinated people. Meanwhile, in patients with compromised immune function, vaccination reduced the risk of coronavirus by 2.5 times.
For their part, the RDIF and the Gamaleya Center recalled that, according to WHO data, more than 23% of people with HIV hospitalized with Covid-19 died, and indicated that the recent study suggests that Sputnik V is the “definitive solution for vulnerable groups, even in countries with high HIV prevalence.” (RT information).
