Spontaneous protests escalate into riots in Argentina

Police in Buenos Aires used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators near the building of the National Congress of Argentina, where reforms proposed by President Javier Miley were being discussed, Liter.kz reports with reference to BBC.

Protesters, who say the legal changes will affect millions of citizens, threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at police and set two cars on fire. As a result of the clashes, several protesters were injured.

According to the source, nine police officers were also injured, and ten people were arrested.

Javier Miley’s proposed reforms to boost the economy include declaring an economic emergency, cutting pensions and limiting labor rights, drawing sharp criticism from left-wing parties, trade unions and social organizations.

In response to accusations of a coup attempt and disruption of Congress by protesters, Miley officials claim that the security forces’ actions were aimed at suppressing “terrorist groups.”

The reforms, which initially included more than 600 points, were withdrawn under pressure from the opposition and were again proposed with significant changes, leaving 238 articles among them. In April, the Chamber of Deputies approved the new project, which was considered by the Senate on Wednesday.

As a result, the Senate approved the draft reforms, and discussions will continue on Thursday. Once approved by the Senate, the document will be returned to the lower house for final approval.
