SPÖ treasure on IKG report: “No place for anti-Semitism!” – 2024-03-14 22:56:56

Interior Minister must ensure security for Jewish community

Vienna (OTS/SK) Sabine Schatz, SPÖ spokeswoman for the culture of remembrance, was horrified but not surprised in her first reaction to the presentation of the anti-Semitism figures by the Jewish Community. “The exploding numbers of anti-Semitic incidents in the IKG anti-Semitism report must be a clear wake-up call. Anti-Semitism, no matter which ideological corner it comes from, has no place in our society!”, reacts the SPÖ MP. “With the strategy against anti-Semitism, we have launched a joint action plan, but we must not rest on our laurels, but must sharpen things up if necessary,” demands Schatz.

“We can no longer allow anti-Semitism to grow. In recent years we have observed how strongly anti-Semitic conspiracy theories have become established in our society. The rapid increase in anti-Semitic attacks following Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel must not be tolerated. The fact that Jews in Austria no longer feel safe in 2024 is intolerable!” The SPÖ MP calls on the Interior Minister to take all measures necessary to ensure the safety of the Jewish community. “In Austria we must be able to guarantee that people are safe in public spaces and can go to work, school or clubs without being threatened.”

“As democrats, we are all asked to act together against every form of anti-Semitism,” emphasizes Schatz, who emphasizes the importance of the Austrian-Jewish cultural heritage law. “It is our responsibility to strengthen and live Jewish culture in Austria as an integral part!”

In this context, the MP also points to her parliamentary question, which shows a huge increase in right-wing extremist crimes in 2023 from 928 to 1,208. “We must firmly oppose all anti-democratic ideologies. The fact that right-wing extremist crimes as well as anti-Semitic incidents have increased so enormously in the IKG report is worrying and a clear mandate for action.” (End) sd/jks
