The head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, announced on April 29 that he will not leave his post due to the corruption investigation against his wife. El Pais reports about it.
“I have decided to continue working with even greater energy leading the Spanish government,” he said in his address to the nation.
At the same time, Sanchez thanked for the public support, which, according to him, greatly influenced his decision.
On April 27, more than 12,000 supporters of the Socialist Party of Spain, who arrived from different regions of the country, organized a demonstration in Madrid in support of Sánchez, asking him not to resign.
As “Armenpress” reported earlier, on April 25, Sanchez suspended the performance of his public duties in order to “take a break and think” whether to remain in that position. The Prime Minister’s decision was due to the fact that the court is investigating corruption allegations against his wife, Begonya Gomes.
Sánchez was able to form a government last year thanks to the support of two Catalan separatist parliamentary parties, in return for which he promised to grant amnesty to Catalan politicians found guilty of holding an illegal independence referendum in 2017.
