SP-Novak ad social housing offensive: “Affordable housing slows down inflation” – 2024-02-09 23:22:44

Full support for the SP-Bund offensive for affordable housing

Vienna (OTS/SPW) The lives of people in Austria have become many times more expensive in the past two years. Housing costs in particular have risen sharply and are a key driver of inflation. With the offensive for affordable housing, the federal SPÖ has presented a plan that will relieve the burden on Austrians, curb inflation and stimulate the economy. “We in Vienna have one goal: a good, affordable life for everyone. That’s why we consistently use the Vienna Way to take effective measures so that Viennese people can rely on an affordable life even in times of rising prices. We therefore fully support the SPÖ’s offensive to secure affordable housing nationwide,” said SPÖ Vienna state party secretary Barbara Novak, MA. ***

“The offensive by SP federal party chairman Andreas Babler is an important step to ensure affordable housing throughout Austria in the future and thus contribute to social balance,” Novak continued. According to constitutional provisions, at least 50 percent of the newly dedicated building land should in future be available for non-profit housing. Vienna shows how effective this measure is: “Social housing in Vienna has been a decisive factor for stable rents in the federal capital for many decades and is an international model of success that is the envy of many other cities with over a million inhabitants,” explains the SPÖ Vienna state party secretary. “In total, 60 percent of all Viennese tenants live in subsidized housing. In order to ensure affordable housing in the future, since 2019 in Vienna, wherever land is being converted into residential development, two thirds have been earmarked for social housing.”

Vienna has also effectively provided tenants with relief during the inflation crisis: “The Vienna rent cap in municipal housing, the Vienna Housing Aid NEW and the recently passed new building regulations are just three of the numerous measures with which we are helping the people of Vienna,” explains Novak . “We firmly believe that affordable, high-quality housing is an essential cornerstone of a good life and a basic human right. Social housing policy noticeably relieves the burden on tenants, stabilizes the housing market and slows down inflation,” concludes Novak. (End) ap/cs
