South Korea may deploy special forces on the border with North Korea – 2024-05-13 03:48:20

The authorities of the Republic of Korea are considering the possibility of deploying special forces units in the border demilitarized zone as a means of strengthening security. Yonhap agency reports this, citing sources.

After abandoning the September 19, 2018 inter-Korean agreement aimed at reducing tensions in the military sphere, the DPRK has begun to restore border checkpoints that were demolished in accordance with the agreements. As Yonhap notes, Pyongyang has, in fact, repaired the facilities.

In response, South Korea plans to deploy special forces in areas near the checkpoints as a means of strengthening security, as it will take “significant time” to restore the concrete structures there.

On November 21, the DPRK successfully launched its first intelligence satellite “Maligyon-1”. In response, on November 22, the Republic of Korea announced the partial suspension of the inter-Korean agreement aimed at reducing tension. That measure referred to provisions on no-fly zones. On November 23, the DPRK Ministry of Defense announced that it would no longer implement the entire agreement and resume the use of measures prohibited by the document.
